Sidecars and tires

My only sidecar complaint is tire wear. Motorcycles with attached sidecars are very hard on rear tires and I don't trust the current "attach a car tire" trend that many riders are following. Car tires may last longer and may also be safe on a three wheeler as long as all three wheels stay on the ground but you will eventually fly the chair or "lift the sidecar wheel" with a sidehack rig. When (and not if) this happens, your stable three wheeled machine will instantly become a two wheeled motorcycle and car tires are very dangerous on a motorcycle because car tires have square tread! Have you ever considered how difficult and dangerous it would be to try to corner your two-wheeled ride with square tread car tires?

My current rear rubber is a Continental ContiTour and we'll see how it wears (so far, the tire has run 4,000 miles and it's still going strong). For reference, an IRC Durotour RS-410 was into negative tread at 4,000 miles. The tire went away so fast that it surprised me and I limped all the way home on a "may-pop" tire. Who knows, maybe I'll post an "unofficial" side-hack tire guide page in a few years.
